Dear
Coach V, I wanted to drop a note and
summarize my feelings on SoccerU and Blast The Ball. I think it
will help others like me decide whether it is right for them.
I am a father (soccer dad) of
two boys. One is 9 and the other is 16. I got involved in
coaching when I somehow volunteered to be my oldest son’s coach
at the Rec level. I have worked with both of them for years
trying to improve their soccer technical skills at home. I never
grew up playing soccer so I struggled in some of these teaching
areas.
They practice twice a week for
1.5 hours during the season, yet they never seem to get enough
technical work. I have spent $1000’s on “summer soccer camps”
and now realize that most of these are fun, social environments
and not really “extensive training” camps. Not much is retained
from a 5 day camp once a year.
I have done a ton of research
online and bought several “coaching DVD’s”. I have attended
several “coaching clinics” and certifications, but most of these
dealt with things such as general coaching, first aid, why kids
stay involved, liability and more. However, none of them REALLY
taught me the skills or how to teach them.
When I saw your website and
previews I was unsure if your series would cover as much as it
said it would. I now know it does.
My oldest son has been
training and playing soccer for 8 years, 2 seasons a year. That
is a HUGE amount of soccer, yet he had never been exposed to
more than half of what you covered. It wasn’t the “general
topics” but the little details that made all the difference. We
watched the series together every night and I had to keep
telling him to sit down because he wanted to try it as he was
watching it.
We have started working on one
skill at a time and keep adding skills daily or weekly. We also
keep revisiting these skills briefly each day. We started a 90
day plan and are keeping a log. It has been 30 days now and he
is already feeling the results. We were both amazed that after
all this time “playing the game”, he never had a specific class
on true dribbling form. While he wanted to start working on
some of the “upper level” skills we started at square one. What
a difference I see in his high speed dribbling control.
He is now also working with
his little brother and sticking to the “core basics” like you
suggest for that age. Both he and I can see how exposing him to
these skills at a younger age will make all the difference in
the later years.
People need to keep in mind
that there is no quick fix or 60 minute video that can teach you
enough to help. This series is long and extensive but it had to
be to include so much info.
I will say this to anyone who
is a soccer parent, or a learning soccer coach, that didn’t grow
up playing the game. You can sit down with this series and learn
more in a few weeks than you might in years about technical
skills. Being able to watch the skills being taught and seeing
players at all levels perform them is extremely valuable.
Thanks for a great series.
